New Orleans and Baton Rouge are the two most populous Louisiana cities with the largest venture capital footprints (more on that coming tomorrow), but the state's tech scene this week will be the most popping in Lafayette.

That's the site for Innovate South, a three-day gathering from April 22 to 24 for founders, technology professionals and innovators to collaborate and connect.

Myself and editor Katie Malone will be there, and we'll be hosting a 'pitch a reporter' happy hour tomorrow, April 22, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Sunday's on Jefferson Street.

If you are in Lafayette, stop by, grab a drink or three and some grub on Technical.ly, and say wassup. Check in on the Technical.ly Louisiana Slack for people to connect with in Lafayette this week, or elsewhere in the state.

Ecosystem Map Spotlight: Illinois

The Technical.ly Innovation Ecosystems Map, showing notable ecosystems across the US.

Illinois has a deep bench: Chicago is a world-class metro with serious tech and corporate depth, while downstate regions contribute advanced manufacturing, logistics and agtech.

Fundamentally, the state has strong research output, mid-to-high startup rates and a dynamic labor market, but is held back by long-running fiscal challenges and uneven perceptions of business climate. Read more...

Car safety tech wins Tulane pitch competition

Tulane University hosted the StartupNOLA x Tulane Innovation Institute Open MIC Night Pitch Competition last week, featuring innovative tech products in health sciences and a grand prize of $750.

One of the winners, management and finance student Annabelle Patterson, pitched a safety system for drivers and passengers in cars — that is not based on the generic crash test dummy with the dimensions of an average-sized man (5’9” and 170 pounds).

Women are 73% more likely to be seriously hurt during a car wreck than men, Patterson said during her presentation.  That’s because traditional safety measures are modeled for men, like seatbelts and seat positions that were established using dummies that match men’s averages for height and muscle mass.

Instead, Annabelle Automotive Designs builds female-centered seating concepts and women-calibrated seatbelts that take into account different body types. Join the Technical.ly Slack’s #louisiana channel to continue reading…
