What’s an event you never miss in Pittsburgh’s startup ecosystem? With so many great meetups, it can be tough to know where to spend limited time. I’d love to hear which ones you consider no-skip — just hit reply and let me know.

This week, I covered an AI student showcase where teens shared what they really think of the tech and how they're learning to use it in their everyday lives. I also profiled Super Powers Mobility, a startup fresh out of stealth with ties to pro racing.

Don't forget to check out the news incubator too. The Pennsylvania state government is planning to expand an AI pilot program, and proposed legislation could let tech startups sell unused tax benefits in exchange for capital.

“I first used AI when I was 12 or something, whenever Snapchat AI came out,” 14-year-old Tristan Clark told Technical.ly. “I thought it was cool. I was trying to figure it out, like I didn’t understand what it was. I use AI a lot now.”

Clark was one of 70 high schoolers who recently participated in an AI-focused summer program led by the Boys and Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania. While all the students got hands-on experience with machine learning, AI ethics and creative computing, they didn't all agree on the value of the tech.

Here's what they had to say, in their own words. Continue reading...

SPM exits stealth to bring off-roading EVs to market

Super Powers Mobility (SPM) founder Jonathan Powers sees plenty of overlap between racing and entrepreneurship.

“When you’re racing, you have to plan for every possible scenario,” Powers, who’s a former professional racer, told Technical.ly. “As a startup founder, you also have to do that.”

Fresh out of stealth, SPM aims to make off-roading EVs mainstream. Commercializing hardware is tough, especially when the initial buzz around EVs has cooled. But Powers believes he’s found the key to breaking through — and it starts with a strong founder origin story. Continue reading...
