I came across PGH Tech Beat's post about Discovery Day this week, and one line stuck with me.

“The robot does not have to look like a human, and in fact shouldn’t look like a human, as the humanoid shape is terribly inefficient for robots," author Austin Orth wrote.

It got me thinking: Why do we want robots to look like us? Sure, it makes sense in some ways — the world is built for humans and sometimes humanoids can look cool — but is it actually practical? Hit reply and let me know what you think.

This week, we’re highlighting the winner of Pittsburgh Tech Week’s pitch competition and taking a look at Lenovo CMO Milo Speranzo’s winding career journey. Plus, keep scrolling to the news incubator section to catch up on Pennsylvania’s newly passed budget and learn how data centers are driving up energy costs.

An Air Force vet's journey to a C-suite role

Some of the most meaningful careers aren’t built by staying the course, but by knowing when to pivot.

For Milo Speranzo, those pivots included more than a decade in the Air Force, a degree in electrical engineering and launching his own consulting firm before moving into tech marketing.

Today, the 47-year-old Pittsburgh native is at the helm of a new partnership between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Lenovo as the company's North America chief marketing officer.

In this edition of How I Got Here, Speranzo reflects on the career pivots that shaped his path and the lessons he’s carried from each turn. Continue reading...

CLEF wins PGH Tech Week pitch competition

CLEF, a mobile app to connect musicians and local venues, beat more than one hundred applicants to win the $10,000 top prize at EXPlore: Pittsburgh Tech Week’s pitch competition.

The win was big for founder Carl Perry, who started the company just one year ago and pitched for the first time ever on Thursday. The startup plans to use the prize money primarily for app development.

“From last year, I’ve been through so much, and to win this award today, it’s just faith to keep going,” Perry told Technical.ly after his win. Continue reading...
