As Maryland gears up for the legislative session in January, I’ve been checking in with lawmakers about their plans for AI.

Last session, Maryland passed a bill creating an AI working group to monitor the technology and make policy recommendations. The catch? It still hasn’t met. I spoke with members of the task force about the delay — and why they say the state needs to move quickly to convene it.

Plus, we’re wrapping up the year with great news: Technical.ly is expanding to Louisiana! I’m especially excited to learn more about tech ecosystems in the South.

This is also my last newsletter of the year. Thanks to everyone who helped get me up to speed in Maryland in 2025. See you in January!

Now, with President Donald Trump’s recent executive order aimed at curbing state-level regulation, lawmakers say the pressure is on.

“Given how fast AI is evolving, I don’t think this is something we can afford to sit on our hands for months,” Del. Lily Qi, a member of the work group, told me. Continue reading...

State orders data center study 📚

A bipartisan group of Maryland lawmakers cleared the way for a data center impact study, overriding Gov. Wes Moore’s May veto.

During a special session on Tuesday, the General Assembly voted to require an environmental and economic analysis of data center expansion, aimed at informing future zoning and energy decisions. Continue reading...
